The Island of Sri Lanka is in the Indian Ocean, just off the south-eastern coast of India.

Coastal areas are mainly flat, with the main mountainous region south of the centre of the country. The highest peak, Pidurutalagala, is 2,524m (8,281ft) above sea level. The often impressive coastline of Sri Lanka stretches for 1,585km (985 miles).
