The national language is PU TONG HUA, known as Mandarin, which is one of the five working languages at the United Nations. China is a multi-national state. Its territory is inhabited by 56 nationalities, which considerably differ from each other. The title nationality is the Hans, accounting for 91% of the whole Chinese population; the other ethnic groups are considered “national minorities”. Most of the 55 minority nationalities in China have their own languages. However,there are more than 80 dialects in China, including Cantonese in the southern part of China. As a written language, Chinese has been used for 6,000 years.
